Essentially, a cold frame is a miniature greenhouse–a bottomless box with a clear lid that captures sunlight, insulates plants and warms the soil. You can grow or start most anything in a cold frame, but they’re especially useful for early spring vegetables like:

  • Broccoli
  • Fingerling carrots
  • Lettuce
  • Peppers
  • Radishes
  • Spinach
  • Tomatoes
  • Other root vegetables
