Living on a homestead is all about life skills so try to involve children in everything. From growing vegetables in the garden to building a new chicken coop.  Even though they are young, children can do a lot on their own when guided. Children can adapt and participate in a homestead life if shown how to.

Young people should be called upon to contribute to the household, and to enjoy doing so. Keep them away from television, and much in the company of their peers. If you enjoy what you’re doing, your children will enjoy sharing in your work.

My top tip: If you have a task that you absolutely cannot do with a baby or toddler around, do it during nap times. Turn off the computer, the phone, whatever distracts. Get to it before they wake up!!

You could let your children be in charge of:

  • feeding animals,
  • collecting eggs, and
  • filling up water bowls for the dogs.
  • help out in the kitchen cooking and preserving the harvest
