40+ Fantastic Reads for Boys ages 8-16
Did you know that boys often underestimate their ability to read? That boys, on average, read less than girls? And that boys are often less motivated to read than girls? Not only that: By the time boys reach high school, roughly half of them will describe themselves as “non-readers.” Since most teachers in schools are female, the reading material introduced is often unintentionally suited for a female audience. Schools are losing boys’ interest before they can even learn literacy skills!
Boys express themselves through action and many teachers make their male students feel that expression through physical bbehavioursis inappropriate for school, and certainly inappropriate come time to read and write. Jackie over at happyhooligans.ca has compiled a list of 40+ fantastic reads for boys aged 8-16. My two winners are:
- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – C.S. Lewis
- The BFG – Roald Dahl
