Most pallets are perfectly fine to work with, but some aren’t. Chances are that the pallet you’re working with is safe, but what if it was treated with some kind of chemical earlier in its life? Always wear gloves and choose wisely. When in doubt, leave it out. But how can you tell? Use common sense, avoid if – wet, greasy, stained, smell or have too many twisted nails – If it looks bad, leave it!

As a general rule, ask before you take pallets that aren’t leaning up against a dumpster. If they’re piled by the side of a building and you’re pawing through them you’re probably stealing. Just make sure you ask before you take anything. You might be able to ask at these kind of places: Tile stores, Heavy equipment repair depots, Motorcycle dealers, Major appliance dealers, Machine shops, Paint stores and Brickyards.
